Trouville-sur-Mer: a second life for shellfish waste

Recycle shellfish waste rather than throwing it away. This is the idea on which the environmental department of the Town of Trouville-sur-Mer, where one of the most important scallop fishing harbours in the region is located, is working on.

Pascale Cordier, the town's environmental assistant, explains:
Recycling shellfish waste from fishermen, fishmongers and restaurateurs in Trouville-sur-Mer has been close to our hearts for several years. Ever since we saw the mountains of scallops and oysters, we've been telling ourselves that there's something to be done!

Since 2017, the city has been in contact with the company Alkern (Pas-de-Calais), which specialises in the environmentally friendly manufacture of concrete blocks. "They presented a brick that allows water to pass through. Draining eco-paving stones made of shell concrete. This process is the result of a research laboratory at ESITC Caen.

Another example of an outlet is the one developed with the company Friendly Frenchy and launched at the Trouvillaise. It involves sunglasses made from shells.
